Hey all! Long time no update! The progress of this project has improved slightly, there is an actual demo with (some) actual gameplay!
Click Here to Download the latest Demo. The new demo comes in a .rar file instead of a zip, that shouldn't be a problem for most of you though.
In this demo you play upto cosmo canyon, and there is some stuff to actually do. I'd say there's about 10-15 minutes of gameplay not including battles, although it is pretty linear and standard at this point. Please play it, enjoy it, and let me know what you think.
I haven't worked on this for a very long time, and unfortunately I doubt that I will for a long time yet. But I haven't given up on it. Once I'm at university I should have plenty of spare time on my hands.

Six new screenshots havebeen added, all of Cosmo Canyon. I'm still working on it :D

Three new screenshots have been added. One of Odin, one of a Potion being collected, and one early screenshot of the infamous cave. Work on Omega Vangelis has been a little slow recently, and will continue to be until my exams are over in about 5 weeks.

BIG UPDATE: Random Encounters are Gone. That's right. I have decided that random encounters are too unpredictable, so instead I've opted for a compromise between the RPG battles and a tru ABS. What happens now is that enemies are walking around the map - some will feel like chasing you and some won't. When you bump into a monster you have to fight it. Simple. The screen goes woosh and you're on the battle map fighting it out. To keep the battles from being too tedious you don't fight every enemy one at a time, you fight them in groups most of the time. I've added a couple of new screenshots to show the enemies on the map. With the enemies, the "good" animals (like the butterflies) and the NPCs, I should have plenty of opportunity to make the maps look lively.

The materia is all coded into the system now. All of the materia can be used, but that's not to say that the moves are complete.I still need to get a few sounds and animatins for a few of the moves, and they will probably be tweaked along the way. But it's progress.

After reading a suggestion on the GW forums, I have implemented a strafing system. When in battle, you can hold down the SHIFT key while moving to walk around by sidestepping and backtracking, without changing the direction that you are facing. This is very handy for physical moves like Slash and Deathblow. The walking has also been slightly tweaked to allow you to turn more easily when in battle.
Right now I've made all of the materia except the last one, but there are a few animations that need improvement and I'll probably be tweaking quite alot. Before the technical side of things (battle and menu systems) is pretty much complete I still need to do the equipment menu, make a bunch of equipment, finish off a few items and create the enemies. I'm currently on the look-out for graphics that I could use for the spell Comet, as well as character sets with monsters or enemies on them. If you find anything along those lines that you think might be useful, please PM me with the details.

The download file for the demo has been updated. The latest tech demo contains 15 materias. You start with only one though - read the readme file included to find out how to access the other fourteen. This is still a technical demo, no storyline included yet.

I've added 3 new screenshots which should demonstrate some of the hard work I've been doing over the last couple of days. There are seven new materias all fully functioning (Bio, Quake, Steal, Shiva, Demi, Ifrit, MP Absorb), the status menu is complete and the materia menu (which I made and finished from scratch yesterday) is also fully working.

Well, there's some good news to any hardcore Omega Vangelis fans there might be lurking out there. It's probably become apparent that I haven't been working on this project much (i.e. at all) over the past couple of months. Well the good news is that I've got a computer in my room now (it's pretty crappy but it works). I've installed RPG Maker on it and transfered Omega Vangelis onto it. So the great news is that I'm starting work on it again. Don't expect rapid progress but I vow to keep dedicated to it and work on it as much as I can without giving myself a headache. I've already made a new move (Bio) so things are moving.

This is old news, but there is a Technical Demo available for this project. I made this a while ago. There are a few incomplete areas, but it's completely playable and demonstrates the way the battle system and menu works.
Here is a link to the demo, enjoy it and please feel free to post some feedback.
